Correspondence, deeds, plats, bills and receipts, advertising circulars and brochures, Moore County, N.C., estate records, guradianship records, and wills, legal papers, and Civil War material of McNeill relating to his family, businesses, church, Democratic Party politics, and offices he held. Bulk (1880-1895) of the personal correspondence (1848-1905) is to McNeill from his sons, daughters Fannie and Ella, and his second wife, Emma S. Worthy McNeill. Letters (1890-1891) from his daughters describe their life as schoolgirls at the Nash and Kollock School at Hillsborough, N.C., and Peace Institute in Raleigh, N.C., and include information concerning Rev. Henry D. Wood (1848-1915), an African American agent of the Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., who operated Dayton Academy, a freedman's school, and pastored a Presbyterian Church. Bulk (1890-1895) of the business correspondence (1854-1905) relates to McNeill's entry into gold mining and venture into brownstone quarrying in Moore County, N.C., with his principal partners, Lewis Grimm (1850-1895), with whom he formed the Grimm Brownstone and Improvement Company, and John Wetmore Hinsdale (1843-1921), a Raleigh lawyer specializing in commercial law. Business and legal paper includes bills and receipts, promissory notes, accounts, and bank records; Kelly et al vs. Grimm and McNeill papers (1886-1904) covering various stages of a suit brought by the Kelly family, heirs of a man named Richardson, to recover lands held by Grimm and McNeill either in trust according to the plaintiffs or by absolute conveyance according to the defendents; and Richardson and Grimm matter (1872-1896) includes papers antecedent to, arising from, and related to the suit brought by the Kellys. Miscellaneous papers include the wills of John McLeod (1860) and Pleasant Short (1895) and material related to Carthage Male and Female Academy, Claremont College (Hickory, N.C.), Hamilton Seminary (Carthage, N.C.), Iredell High School (Fancy Hill, N.C.), freemasons, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Junior Order United American Mechanics, and Presbyterian Church. Civil War materials include 95 letters (1863-1865) originating with the Confederate States of America Conscript Bureau and its offices including one letter concerning the conscription of one fifth of all men employed in mining and nitre work into active military service and the transfer of certain men from duties at the C.S.A. arsenal at Fayetteville, N.C., and 94 letters of investigation and arrest issued between the end of Dec. 1863 and the end of Feb. 1865 in an effort to recover 81 Confederate soldiers, 2 sailors, and one blacksmith, who were natives of Moore County or who had gone there to escape detection as deserters or as soldiers absent without leave. Also includes 1 v. of accounts (1861-1863) of the Board of Agents for the Volunteer Companies from Moore County, N.C., containing information relating to the boarding, provisioning, and clothing of volunteers and economic support for their families during the Civil War; together with a list of 96 marriage licenses issued in Moore County between Aug. 1855 and Feb. 1857. The four volunteer companies covered are Capt. Jesse L. Bryan's Company of Cavalry (Company I, 2nd North Carolina Cavalry), Capt. William P. Martin's Company (Moore County Independents, Company H., 26th North Carolina Regiment), Capt. John M. Kelly's Company (Moore County Scotch Riflemen, Company C, 35th North Carolina Regiment), and Capt. M.W. Swann's Company (Company H, 30th North Carolina Regiment).
